For any hiker, the summit of Mount Whitney is an awe-inspiring metaphor of achievement. The highest peak in the lower 48 states.
Magnificent views from its summit are unparalleled, displaying the Sierra's tree-less spines and granite vistas, plus the White Mountains, Death Valley NP, Lone Pine, and much of Sequoia and Kings Canyon NPs.
But it's not easy; the 22-mile trek, with an elevation change of over 6,000 feet, is a challenge even for the most experienced. Most complete the route in 12-14 hours, beginning at Whitney Portal before sunrise.
